Bob the Lure is an action adventure game where you take control of BOB to save his girlfriend from the evil FISH KING. Protect your LINE, swing your HOOK, and defeat the king's guards as you descend the depths. Along the way you'll find BOBBERS and SINKERS to help Bob reach the bottom, and make sure to collect all of Bobbette's lost TREASURES !!

.

.

.

The 'Guide' option wasn't included unfortunately so here is how to play the game vvvvv

Instructions:

Descend to the bottom of the pond to rescue Bobbette from the Fish King!

As Bob falls, he will slowly lose momentum. After a while, he will float back to the top. Defeat fish to acquire SINKERS and increase the depth Bob can fall.

  SINKER

Sometimes, SINKERS will fall randomly from above as well.

Fish can't hurt Bob's head, but they can damage his LINE so be aware of what's above you! DODGE with [space] or (A)/(Cross) to make Bob's line invulnerable for a brief period.

DODGING

Even though Bob's line can extend past the upper edge of visible space, only mobs and obstacles currently on-screen can harm it.

Collecting BOBBERS replenishes Bob's health.

BOBBER

Sea creatures passing by Bob's hook will latch on. Bob can't collect any POWER-UPS or TREASURES until he releases the fish, and if you keep fish on the line for too long, you'll get reeled in!! SWING your hook with [J] or (X)/(Square) to release a caught fish and to attack any fish nearby.

SWINGING

Be careful where you swing, though: Bob won't be able to grab SINKERS, BOBBERS, or TREASURES while swinging his hook either, and it cancels out the invulnerability granted by DODGING.

The plan for Bob is to include him as an unlockable minigame in a much larger game I'm currently developing, and within this game Bob the Lure will be part of a smaller subseries of minigames played on an in-universe console called the 'Romp Cog' (heavily inspired by the Sega Game Gear) hence the frame around my game screen.

This is essentially a proof-of-concept for a more in-depth version of the game that would include the following:

  • Treasures:
    • Collecting all the treasures will do something
    • A larger and more thoroughly randomized selection of treasures to find on your way down
    • Flavour text for each of the treausres
    • An inventory screen that lists which of Bobbette's treasures you have found
  • Rogue-like mechanics for replayability
    • Randomized spawning for enemies, powerups, and treasures
    • Unlockable movement options and attacks (dash, fishing-inspired explosives, etc)
    • Multiple endings
    • Skins for Bob
  • Biomes
  • Checks and conditions to progress through the different biomes
  • More/New biomes
  • More unique mobs
  • "Miss Bobbette Mode" (if you managed to get to the final cutscene you might be able to guess what this would entail haha)
  • More cohesive visual style among the various menus and UI elements
  • More and varied SFX
  • A score system that translates to in-game currency in the larger project this will be a part of
  • A visual countdown for how much time Bob has left before being reeled when he has a fish on his hook
  • A working web build
    • Touch-sensitive buttons on the decorative, handheld-inspired border surrounding the main gameplay viewport to allow for play on mobile devices

BUGS:

  • Sometimes upon the level resetting, swordfish enemies will stop targeting the player as they pass.
  • Bob may stop displaying animations past their first frame however the hitboxes and SFX for all techniques still work properly during these cases, only the visual output is affected
  • Sometimes upon the level resetting, some enemies may be shifted downward (about half a screen or so).
  • Some of the text boxes in the final cutscene display text at the wrong time, but only during transitions and does not affect the dialogue's progression
  • Hooked fish may continue to "wiggle" briefly after being caught, sometimes causing them to float next to Bob instead of more directly below him (this I know already how to fix it just wasn't important enough to stress about right now😌)

A nice short game. Really captures that NES feel and difficulty perfectly. Would love to see how the items are implemented when the get fully realized.

Thanks for playing! I plan on including some foreshadowing in the item descriptions haha
